Installing a travel eSIM takes 3–5 minutes. This guide walks you through the process on both iPhone and Android, from purchase to activation.
Before you start
- Make sure your phone supports eSIM (check our list)
- Your phone must be carrier-unlocked (contact your carrier if unsure)
- Connect to Wi-Fi — you need internet to download the eSIM profile
- Have your QR code ready — this comes from your eSIM provider after purchase (email or in-app)
Installing on iPhone
Open Settings → Cellular
Go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM (or "Add Cellular Plan" on older iOS versions).
Scan the QR code
Tap "Use QR Code" and point your camera at the QR code from your provider. The phone will detect and download the eSIM profile automatically.
Label the plan
iOS will ask you to label the new line. Choose something like "Travel" or "Thailand eSIM" to keep things organized. You can always rename it later.
Set your default lines
iOS will ask which line to use for cellular data, calls, and messages. Set the eSIM as your data line and keep your physical SIM for calls/SMS.
Activate
Some eSIMs activate immediately. Others activate when you first connect to a local network at your destination. Check your provider's instructions.
Installing on Android (Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus)
Open Settings → Connections → SIM manager
The exact path varies by manufacturer. On Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM. On Pixel: Settings → Network → SIMs → Add SIM.
Scan QR code
Select "Scan QR code" and point your camera at the provider's QR code. The profile will download.
Confirm and enable
Confirm the installation. Set the eSIM as your mobile data line while keeping your physical SIM for calls.
Activate at destination
Turn on the eSIM when you land. Most plans start the validity countdown at first network connection.
Troubleshooting
QR code won't scan
Try manually entering the activation code instead. Your provider should include an "SM-DP+ Address" and "Activation Code" that you can type in if the QR scan fails. Also ensure you're connected to Wi-Fi.
"eSIM not supported" error
This usually means your phone is carrier-locked. Contact your carrier to request an unlock. Some carriers lock eSIM functionality even on otherwise unlocked phones.
No data after installation
Check that: (1) the eSIM line is enabled, (2) it's set as the cellular data line, (3) data roaming is turned ON for the eSIM line, and (4) you're within the plan's coverage area.
Can't receive calls/texts on home number
Make sure your physical SIM is still enabled for voice and messaging. On iPhone, check Settings → Cellular and confirm your home line is set for voice/SMS.
