Central Asia — Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan — is one of the most rewarding and least-connected travel regions. Mobile infrastructure has improved dramatically in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan but remains limited in Kyrgyzstan's mountains, Tajikistan's Pamir Highway, and Turkmenistan in general. Choosing the right eSIM here requires careful planning.
Coverage by country
Kazakhstan: Strong 4G in Almaty, Astana, Shymkent, and along the main Almaty-Astana highway. Rural steppe areas have limited coverage. Uzbekistan: Good coverage in Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva — the main Silk Road tourist corridor. Kyrgyzstan: Good in Bishkek and Issyk-Kul lake area. Mountain passes, trekking areas (Song-Kol, Alay Valley), and remote jailoos have little to no coverage. Tajikistan: Dushanbe has decent coverage. The Pamir Highway has very limited connectivity. Turkmenistan: Extremely limited eSIM availability and internet access is heavily restricted.
Best providers
Airalo covers Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan reliably. Coverage in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is available but may connect through fewer carriers. Drimsim covers all five Central Asian countries with their physical SIM + eSIM model — the physical SIM can be useful as backup in areas with limited eSIM support. Yesim and Saily have more limited Central Asian coverage — check their apps before purchasing.
Data tips for the Silk Road
Download everything before leaving cities. Once you leave Tashkent, Samarkand, or Bishkek, coverage becomes unpredictable. Download offline maps (Maps.me is popular among Central Asia travelers), phrasebooks, and booking confirmations. Yandex vs Google. Yandex Maps and Yandex Taxi work better than Google services in Kazakhstan and parts of Uzbekistan. Download the Yandex app. VPN recommended. Some services are blocked in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. A VPN keeps you connected to your usual apps. Budget 2–3 GB per week. You will be offline more than online in Central Asia — this is part of the charm.
Check eSIM coverage for your route.
